What is literature

WHAT S LITERATURE
The word “literature has been defined by many and yet the final meaning is yet to be agreed on. I have now come with this blog, to help you understand what really literature is.
          According
to the oxford dictionary, literature is “the body of all written works”. Anything written down is literature, it then goes down to saying that it is “the collection of creative writing of a nation, people, group or culture”.
Literature has now passed just the meaning, it is now a subject being studied in schools all over the world so, literature as a subject of study, is the study of literary works (poetry, prose and drama), and the trial to apply it in the world of today. It is the writing or study of a whole body of literary composition (the genres of literature). Literature is any work of art which uses language, plot, character, setting, tone, mood etc to picture what really life looks like.
Literature is divided into three genres as mentioned before, that is poetry, prose and drama. In prose, the writer is free to use any sentences of various length, he is however not free to use words as he likes. The diction is always simple and clear and more direct.
In poetry, the words are more technical and difficult to understand, the poet uses some literary devices to achieve his aim or than in prose. However, poetry is shorter than prose. The problem poetry has is to be able to assign more than one meaning to any work of poetry. The nice part is that the poet is given license to use words as he likes e.g in prose one can’t change the spelling of “woman ”to“ wuman, but that can be done in poetry.

Finally, drama is another genre entirely, this have to do with the use of acts and scenes, the use of dialogue, chorus e.t.c. it is more technical also when compared to prose.
